The Lord Laughs

Psalm 2:4-6, 12b "He who sits in the heavens laughs..." (ESV)

I believe that God must have a sense of humor, but that is not what the Psalmist is referring to here. The passage opens up with a picture of a world gone wild due to a humanistic worldview that places man in control of the universe. People plotting, nations raging; it sounds alot like the year 2006, doesn't it?

God's reply to this? Laughter. Not comical laughter. It's more like a fecitious laugh. It's more like, "These people just don't get it. They just don't get that all their manuevering is in vain. They just can't understand that I am absolutely in control of this universe. They think they're so smart."

It's easy to become dismayed by our circumstances. Yet, here we are reminded that God is in control; that nothing takes Him by surprise. When in verse 6 the Lord says, while observing the futility of humanism, "As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill" we are reminded that despite politics, the economy, a war, that Jesus will be victorious. Nothing can thwart God's soveriegn plan of redemption by the cross that was in place before the foundation of the world.

Take that a step further. All of those trials you will face today that are founded upon the ignorance and arrogance of man--be it in your marriage or with your kids or with your boss or with whatever--the moment we try to take matters into our own hands and react in fear or retaliate in anger, the Lord laughs. He says, "When will they learn that I'm in control and that Jesus is King?

Verse 12 ends with, "Blessed are all who take refuge in him." "Happy" are those who stand in the shadow of the cross.

Today, whatever happens, remember that God is in control and then look to the cross. Jesus is King. "Blessed are all who take refuge in him."
